THE SIMPLE TRUTH

Hope for the Philippines: As A First World Country…

Wednesday, March 7, 2007

Some thirty to forty years ago, the Philippines was one of the richest country in Asia… Envied by its Asian neighbors because of its sudden economic growth…  The Philippines was the very first Asian country who had banks, have good airway travels, best leisure spots, have one of the best cities in Asia being Manila(a center of commercialism and travel, connecting the far east to the orient seas), have the best educational system and as a matter of fact, has one of the highest literacy rates in Asia up to date.

At that time, the economy was upbeat, and for that, Filipinos have great access in health care; Filipinos don't have any problems regarding their lifestyle of living for the cost of living expenditures were somewhat attainable by a middle class family. The Philippine peso at the time was equal only to a half U.S. dollar. The Philippines was definitely one of the best countries in Asia during those decades…

Now we are left behind by our fellow counterparts such as Singapore, China, South Korea, and Malaysia whom before belongs to the most deprived countries in Asia… Look at them now! Try to see the difference of their countries from our country… They are being hailed all over the world for their clean and livable cities, fast growing economies, and of course they are one of the strongest nations in Asia right now. Sad to say this but the Philippine peso now amounts to forty eight pesos against a U.S. dollar, although it is still fighting in the stock market these days, the amount greatly differs from before… And everything now in our country has to be paid off, nothing is free now…

What happened to our country?  Is it possible that we can  still figure out a way to improve our standard of living and stabilize our economic growth?  A simple question, but I know that  it is hard to  do… We are all aiming to have the best quality of life for ourselves, our family, and for our future generations. Everyone dreams of living in a country where everything is free, the air is clean and people can relax and humbly say that this  country is "the best place to be". I know that there is still hope for the Philippines, the country that I call home for the past twenty- two years… I know that we all can make it if we all believe and trust in our government… If we eliminate crab mentality within us, then there will still be hope for the Philippines to grow and become a first world country soon…

i guess a lot of Pinoys have no hope for the Philippines anymore…

But I believe, one day we will be the best in the world! fingers crossed!

Posted by janusrichardronimo at December 5, 2007, 10:30 am

I strongly believe that the Philippines still has hope. And we, people from other countries, could help our fellow filipinos by at least sending them money back there or migrate the rest of our relatives to the country of which we are living in(Canada for me). That’s exactly what my family is doing. I also have a dream where me and a couple of my friends would go and settle to one of the Philippine’s tropical beaches. I want to show them how beautiful our country is. I’d also be helping the Philippines in a way by promoting its tourism.

wow. so much dreams for the Philippines eh?

I wish that all our aspirations for our beloved nation will come into reality someday…

Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Lol thanks to Japanese and American investment Philippines will be first world by 2020 apparently. So we can reclaim our former spot of being number 2 in Asia next to Japan. One day Philippines will make its own electronics .One day Philippines will make its own Car brand equal to the likes of Suzuki or Daihatsu. That day may be 12-15 years away but I’m happy to say I’ll be there to see it.Arroyo is smart making a free trade agreement with Japan.Biggest trade partners are America and them so It’s good.

It will be the Pearl of orient again!Surpassing South Korea and Taiwan!Type in Philippine economy on Wikipedia. Its looking hot.Just as hot as China’s!

I’ve been following Philippine economic development for more than 25 years now (I’m a Business-Economics major). I’ve read some on-line sources (on the Internet, that is) that classify the Philippines as a NIC. While the country has been experiencing some modest economic expansion under GMA (and the economic grow appears to be accelerating), I sincerely doubt that we will be a First World country by the Year 2020 (some 12 years from now). For one, it will take no less than 20 years of high GDP (at least 7%) and sustained growth to propel the country to First World status. At 7% GDP growth rate, an economy doubles in size every 10 years (e.g., a US $100 billion economy grows to US $200 billion). The higher the growth rate, the shorter time it takes to double the size of an economy.

Please note that Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore reached GDP expansion as high as 10%. China has been experiencing double-digit growth rates for more than a decade. Hew….

The Philippines only averaged 3.1% annual economic growth in the past 20 years, very low by East Asian standards where 7% to 9% economic growth rate is common. Compounded by our high annual population growth rate of 2.36% (blame the Catholic Church and the balimbing, kowtowing politicians), it takes no mathematician to figure out why Philippine per capita income is among the lowest in the region

The Philippines has one of the highest poverty incidence in East Asia (some 32% of our population live on incomes of less than $2.00 a day).

In the 1950’s and 1960’s, up to the early 1970’s, the Philippines was second to Japan in economic development. Our economic woes are the direct result of a convergence of factors — wrong economic strategies, unbridled population growth, endemic corruption, and polical bickering, to name a few. I doubt that we will ever regain the Number 2 spot in East Asia. In fact, it is impossible. Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan already propelled themselves into highly industrialized, developed nation status. Compared to Malaysia alone, the Philippines must be 10 to 15 years behind in economic development. Malaysia has more chances of becoming a First World country by 2020.

I would like to comment on the GDP growht of the Philippines… According to wikipedia, the Philippine econimic growth has reached to 7.5% as of 2006 and the poverty line of our country is 26%…

So I guess there is still hope for the Philippines… I won’t lose hope… Imma keep my fingers crossed for this one! :D

Posted by janus at January 23, 2008, 1:10 am

Yes, the Philippines still has hope. I’ve never been this bullish about the Philippines. My first blog entry was simply a reaction to anyone’s dream of seeing the Philippines become a First World country by the year 2020. That’s only 12 years away. It is a remote possibility. 2030 is more realistic, and that is contingent upon the Philippines SUSTAINING its growth momentum (no boom and bust cycles), with economic growth accelerating to AT LEAST 7%.

To become a developed country by 2020, the Philippines must grow by no less 10% annually. The country is just beginning to show signs of economic dynamism. The country must re-orient its development strategy to a proven one — an export-led, outward-looking industrialization, the same successful economic strategy started by Japan, mirrored by South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, and adopted successfully by Malaysia (and Thailand to a large extent). An export-led industrialization is both the beginning and the result of an industrialized economy. Already, we have found a niche — the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) , so the Philippines needs to expand its industrial base to complement its new found strength (service sector). The country’s emerging shipbuilding industry can lead the way to industrialization.

But give credit to where it’s due. Let’s praise President Arroyo for her exemplary stewardship of the Philippine economy. She is making many Filipinos proud, and I’m one of those who loudly say, “I’m proud to be Pinoy”.

Posted by Misael Balayan at January 27, 2008, 7:45 am

we are fast growing to be a powerhouse in the Asian Region…. When I saw one story about Asia, it said that the Philippines has an emerging economy and a grin made my day brighter from that very moment…

I won’t lose hope for the Philippines, I am a nurse but I want to serve this country to the best of my abilities, I don’t wanna leave my country and serve others… I still believe in our country… I know we can make it by 2020, who knows! :D

And from that day on, we will be envied again by our other Asian counterparts. hehehe… I love Philippines… and Kudos for the President, she is one of a kind…

And hey! you’re making me goose bumps! :)

Posted by janus at January 27, 2008, 10:58 pm

I do believe the Philippines will move up to its category. Only JESUS is the solution, promotions come from Him and if the vision 2020 came we become a First World Country not needing Visa all over the world to travel. That would be for the purpose of evangelizing the World witout limitations. Philippines was named under King Philip which came from the Phiip the Evangelist from the Word of God.

Posted by Lorenz at February 16, 2008, 4:24 am

It is absolutely true! The Philippines still has hope! If we have done it in the last 30-40 years, we can still do that. According to my sources, the Philippine Economic growth for 2007 soars to 7.5%. The Philippines was the second fastest economy in south east asia alongside Singapore and fifth fastest in ASIA. The Philippine Peso was regarded as the best performing currency in Asia.

People don’t realize this. They are always saying that the Philippines is a hopeless country.

But the most important of all is to trust in God.
Jesus is the only way.

As long as we renew our love to our country, we will achieve and reach what we are hoping for… to be on list of FWC. But sad to say that most of Filipinos has no love to our country specially those corrupt politicians and corrupt government employees.
We will keep on praying that God will do a miracle to our country by preventing this people to lead our country.
And we should stop blaming each other but to think and contribute how to resolve these problems that our country facing with.
LOVE TO OUR COUNTRY IS THE KEY… please remember this quote, “Do not ask what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country”

I love the Philippines even anything happened to our country. We still have hope for our country to become a first world country by 2020. We should hope that we will not return to the military junta days similar to Marcos Era.

People don’t realize this, they are always blaming President Arroyo for corruption. I still regard President Arroyo as the best president of our country just like Fidel Ramos and Diosdado Macapagal.

yeah.,definitely i hope that we could someday compete or even beat wealthy countries such as japan, singapore, korea and hongkong we were once a powerful country thajn them they made their country a industrialized country were our country was once we can also make it one day that we could be richer than luxembourg,u.k,u.s.a and specially the country whom once called as indiyo’s the spain.

yes it is POSSIBLE! as long as they seperate the archipelago into smaller nations like cebu. the largest contributor of the philippine GDP.! we could be a first world. im looking forward for a republic of cebu. GOD BLESS CEBU ALWAYS! hahahaha

philippines has all the potentials the only problems is the places in our country just look or please tell me what investing tycoons are going to do to such places we have the pollution is everywhere the best key to a successful country is being disciplined and being disciplined will make the places beautiful and other tycoons from wealthy/powerful countries will be investing here in our country that could lead us back from what we are before but still i believe that by 2011 places in our country will be infrastated by our government they’ll be cleaning it and going to make it look modernized so that our cuntry will be the biggest investment country by 2020 and could get along with japan and china somehow. . . !

To become a First World nation, first and foremost, we must practice our faith. Clarify within ourselves why our we here and where are we going. By practicing our faith and having a clear sense of purpose, discipline will ultimately follow, one of the ingredients of a FW nation. Second, we need to look at our factor endowments. We need to understand our God-given resources and utilize these resources for our comparative advantage. For example, what happened to our “Oil of Life?” Look at our exports in the 1950s. Why are we rich during that time? Is it because of the U.S., is it because we contained the Huks, or is it because of the coconut industry? Third, educational reform. Education should be research and entrepreneurial-oriented. Fourth, we need a leader for others and a leader who has a vision for the future.

For me, these are some of the elements that are applicable to us in order to become a First World nation.

Posted by John Gabriel at April 15, 2009, 1:32 pm

2020 may be to close to become a First World nation. But timeline is not more important than having to have the foundation towards achieving that dream. We have been down before, there’s nothing to go but up for our country. In reality, we’re growing up and we need to advocate more for societal change, for reform, and for the integral development of our people. As a democratic nation, we’re fortunate than other countries who are not yet democratic or who have just become democratic. Because these countries have to undergo the difficult process of democratization. Still, we must admit that we are a very very young nation, but we have to start moving and dreaming for our children’s children’s future not tomorrow but NOW.

hey its jay again i’ve heard that this about april or may 2009 the country has just become a secondworld country along with the top 8 wealthiest countries in asia china, japan, south korea, india, thailand, malaysia and singapore with a GDP per capita income of $1,400 hahah i think this will prove to you that the 2020 vision can be a reality and even be earlier than this expected year 2020 i know some of you will not believe but search it in the web a economist also said that it’s true not just our president and yes become realistic but also be optimistic and do not become so jaded to receive some good news it just so proves that you are a hopeless citizen of your country.

Posted by joesel at May 11, 2009, 11:04 am

one of the things that most developed countries have, including those who were very poor way back when, is nationalism. the love for their own language and culture and their pride for the said things. what we filipinos lack is the love and pride for our national language and collective national culture, in my opinion.

One way to make sure we create a First World Philippines is to create 1000 Multi-millionaire Filipino Businessmen. These millionaires will surely create a lot of jobs and inspire other to follow their footsteps to become millionaires themselves.

How to do this? First, teach Filipinos how to become financially literate. Teach them financial education. Teach them what is to become financially FREE.

We, at CA2020 Business Community, have a mission to spread financial education nationwide and the world. Our vision is to have a First World Philippines.

If you want to carry out that mission too, join us at www.ca2020.net. We now have 5000+ members carrying that mission at the same time building, practicing what we preach. We build businesses and we train businessmen.

… it is really hard to admit that our country which once was admired by the other country are being left behind. but then as long as we continue to strive hard and we keep the faith burning, first world Philippines are not far from reality. and it is happening right now.

being part of the community which goal is to make the Philippines a first world country is an honor. at least i am proud to say that i’m not dreaming for this to happen but we are making it happen.

This country is hopeless…. The rich get richer and poor get poorer… The elite and the politicians of the Philippines are so greedy that they take practically everything leaving little or nothing for the poor… While they bask in their billions the poor who wish for the just a simple life with the basics such as food in the table, shelter and medicine for sickness is left hungry homeless and dying of disease… justice and govt. services are for the rich and influential…. our natural resources are close to depletion and our population is balooning to uncontrollable proportions… I once believed that things could change but now I see that this country is as I said hopeless…

First World Philippines is possible I believe (based upon my travels) if we are able to do or have the three basic things needed:
spread financial education (so that Filipinos may know how to manage their money and understand how to make their money grow not by working alone),
strong industry and business support by the government (to encourage more local and foreign investors)
and to develop discipline (openness to change and growth is so much needed by each and every one of us).
If we focus on negativity and pessimism, it may be impossible, but as the saying goes:

A winner says: It’s hard but it’s possible.
A loser says: It’s possible but it’s hard.

Where are we focusing on?
